Here is an article from the KC Star. I know it probably doesn't mean much to most of you but pay close attention to the part that I made bold. Especially, those of you who went to the St. Louis journalism convention our senior year. Wasn't this the nickname of school Seattle West.

Nimrods not the only intriguing high school nickname

That little note last week about the origins of the Watersmeet, Mich., high school nickname, the “Nimrods,” brought plenty of response from folks trying to come up with the strangest high school nicknames they had heard.

Of course, we have a few right around Missouri, like the Columbia Hickman Kewpies, the West Plains Zizzers and the Maryville Spoofhounds.

Here's a look at some of the more interesting ones I've found:

In Arizona you have the Gila Bend “Gila Monsters” and the Yuma “Criminals.” Yuma used to be home of the Arizona State Prison.

In Connecticut, you have the Moodus “Noises.” In Georgia, the Johnson “Atom Smashers.” In Idaho, the Sun Valley “Cutthroat Trout.”

In Illinois , you have the Hampshire “Whip-Purs” and the Hoopeston “Cornjerkers.” In Indiana, you have the Vincennes “Alices.”

In Massachusetts, you have the Williamstown “Purple Cows.”

Michigan has some of the best, from the Detroit Pershing “Doughboys,” to the Goodrich “Martians,” to the Kingsford “Flivvers,” to the Mount Clemens “Battling Bathers,” to the Vassar “Vulcans,” to everyone's favorite, the “Nimrods.”

Oregon has the Bend “Lava Bears.” Pennsylvania has the Mars “Fightin' Planets” and the Williamsport “Millionaires.”

In Tennessee, you have the Chattanooga Central “Purple Pounders.” In Texas, you have the Hereford “Whitefaces,” which also is known as the “Hostile Herd.”

Washington has the Explorations Academy's “Screaming Penguins.” Wisconsin has the Butternut “Mighty Midgets.”

And my favorite, other than the Nimrods, has to be from West Virginia, where you have the Poca High School Dots. Yes, the Poca Dots.
